Volunteer / Donation Opportunities

Festival of Trees We're donating to the Festival of Trees this year, an activity which benefits Primary Children's hospital. Donations are needed for supplies, volunteers are needed for creating decorations, and actually decorating the tree. Ideas are needed for just what we're doing! We're in the planning stages right now; check the messageboards for further details.
MS Walk 2005
April 9, 2005

Go to the Utah Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and register to walk. When registering, enter team code UTUWHOBO01.

Team Hobbits for Health raised $236 last year, even though we only had 3 walkers. There is plenty of time to plan ahead this year, so get registered early!

Last year we made t-shirts with Hobbit feet on the back for our team. The shirts will be available again this year. Additionally, some may plan to walk in costume. It's a great way to raise money for the cause: according to some Star Wars walkers, some people contribute specifically because they know the walker will be going out in costume.

MS is an unpredictable and devastating disease that can attack any of us in the prime of life. Imagine, one day you are ready to take on the world…and the next you are faced with the diagnosis of an incurable and debilitating disease. MS researchers have made extraordinary progress these last few years searching for a cure and money raised will help support these vital efforts. Funds will also be used to support local programs for people with MS and their families.

Kids and dogs are welcome, make it an activity for the whole family. It was a lot of fun last year, I hope to see more of you there this time around!

Online Opportunities

Find-A-Drug

This is a great way to help out for those with very limited time, and for everyone else as well. It can't get much easier than this...

Find-a-Drug is a not for profit distributed computing project. Their goal is to use the power of shared computer time to process molecule reactions to find possible drugs to fight or cure many serious diseases.

Any-one with a PC can help the research by downloading the THINK software. This software runs in background or as a screen-saver so that it does not interfere with normal use of the PC. When the computer is not otherwise being used, the software evaluates the potential of molecules to interact with a protein target. Each molecule that is predicted to interact with the target is considered a "hit" and may become a new drug for treating an important disease.

I have had this on my computer for several months now; it doesn't affect the performance, and it doesn't cause any problems.

A team for our group is currently being set up. To join the team, download the software and install it. Right click on the 'Think' icon in the system tray and click on setup. Click on the 'General' tab heading and enter the Team Number 2177 at the bottom of the setup page and click update. Your Statistics will be added to the Team Stats at the next update.

Go to http://www.find-a-drug.org/ to download the software and read more about this great program.

Project Gutenberg's Distributed Proofreaders

Project Gutenberg digitizes public domain books and publications. This makes huge amounts of material easily accessible.

This site provides a web-based method of easing the proofreading work associated with the digitization of Public Domain books into Project Gutenberg e-books. By breaking the work into individual pages many proofreaders can be working on the same book at the same time. This significantly speeds up the proofreading/e-book creation process.

It doesn't take long to proofread a page, and it's actually fun. Every page helps, so do one or two in your spare moments.

Our team page is at:
